7 Anti-Aging Tricks (Your Future Self Will Thank You For)

"If you’re in the generational label of “millennial,” anti-aging products are probably not one of your priorities. In our youthfulness it’s easy to take advantage of our bodies’ ability to handle late nights, bad diets, stress, sloppy posture, and too many cocktails. What we don’t think about is what the repercussion of not taking care of ourselves could be in the future!"

In our youthfulness it’s easy to take advantage of our bodies’ ability to handle late nights, bad diets, stress, sloppy posture, and too many cocktails. What we don’t think about is what the repercussion of not taking care of ourselves could be in the future!"

With just a few lifestyle tweaks, you can do things now that your future self will be thankful for. As a Makeup Artist and Licensed Image Consultant/Wardrobe Stylist, appearance is obviously something that I am concerned about. One of my life goals is to not only live to 107, but to also still look fabulous and feel doing it. Below are the 8 anti-aging tricks that I try to follow reverently.

1. Retrain Your Posture

From work, to commuting, meal time, and time spent on devices, the average person spends at least 13 hours a day sitting, according to a survey by tech company Ergotron. If that time is spent slouching with your chin hanging down (we’re all guilty of this) you’re putting unnecessary strain on your spine and encouraging “tech neck.” In the long run you will benefit from trying to train yourself to sit upright with your shoulders and neck aligned. An additional habit we have, especially when on devices is creasing our forehead. It may be an act of concentration, but it can lead to wrinkles setting in early on.

2. Establish A Skincare Regimen

You may think a skincare regimen is something you don’t need until you hit middle age, but ideally the sooner you’re proactive, the longer it will take to see signs of aging! Both women and men in their twenties should establish a simple three step routine including a cleanser, serum, and moisturizer. You don’t have to go out and buy the most expensive products. Now there are many brands that are focused on offering the millennial generation quality, affordable skincare. Department store cosmetic counters seem to be a lost art with younger generations, but there you can feel and try the products and find the ones that will work best for your face. A few of my favorites are Shiseido’s Ibuki line (budget-friendly products that make your skin feel amazing) and Osmotics Blue Copper (a luxury brand created for those with sensitive skin.)

3. Washing Your Face Before Bed

This is so important if you wear makeup! Sleep is the time when your skin repairs itself. Going to bed without removing your makeup keeps your pores from being able to breathe. A tip that I always give to my clients is to keep a pack of facewipes and a leave-on face mask beside your bed. That way no matter what, you have no excuse to not give your face a little love before catching some z’s.

4. Staying Hydrated

Coffee and soda during the day, followed by alcoholic beverages at night can cause you to be dehydrated without realizing it. Up to 60% of your body is water, so from the moment you wake up try to make it a priority to hydrate. Not crazy about just plain water? Try it infused with fruit or make a cup of caffeine-free tea.

5. Balance Sun Exposure

We all need vitamin D to maintain a healthy immune system. Sunshine can even benefit your mental health and give you a clearer complexion. It is important to balance your sun exposure to prevent damage to your skin. If you are going to be outside between 10 am and 4 pm, wear an SPF of at least 15. I recommend finding a good facial SPF such as Clarin’s. They are oil-free and usually a lot easier on your facial skin. Tanning is a never-ending controversy. I could write an entire article just on that. Now that there are so many good sunless tanners, that is a much safer option if you are concerned about aging your skin!

6. Upgrade Your Pillowcase

For thousands of years silk has been considered a luxurious beauty product used by countless cultures. Recently, celebrities such as the Kardashians have made silk pillowcases trendy. They provide a gentle resting place for your head and face that will result in softer skin, less stretching and fewer “sleep marks.” As an added bonus, they also prevent split ends. “Slip” makes great pillow cases and sleep masks.

7. Get Active

I have worked at a couple different fitness centers over the years, and my favorite members were the retirees that came in everyday without fail. A few of them were over ninety years old and admitted that their health was the outcome of staying active. If we start forming healthy habits in our twenties, they should stick with us our entire lives. Everyone needs to find a way to be active. If you aren’t a gym person, make it a goal to spend part of your lunch break walking or take a yoga class a few times a week. Physical activity relieves stress, strengthens our muscles resulting in better posture, brightens your complexion, and helps maintain a healthy body weight. ~
